myNETfolder

The Computer Shed offers a file synchronizing service called myNETfolder which can be extremely useful in several different ways. It works by installing the client software on one or more computers. You then have a single designated folder that will be synchronized from your computer to the remote myNETfolder server. Any new files put in that folder, any changes you make to any files in that folder, etc. are automatically synched to the remote server.

So, first of all, you can use myNETfolder simply as an off-site backup. You install the client software on just one computer, put all of your important files in the designated folder, and they are automatically backed up to the remote server via your Internet connection. That alone makes the product very useful. But wait, there's more!

If you install the client software on more than one computer, then myNETfolder will keep the files in the designated folder synchronized between all the computers that you have it installed on. A simple example would be if you have a desktop computer that stays in your office and a laptop that you travel with. If you keep your documents in your myNETfolder on the desktop computer, then they will be synched to the server. Then when you turn on the laptop, it will also sync with the server and bring down all the files in your myNETfolder. Once the files are synced to you laptop, you can work on them just as if you were at your desktop. When you are done, save the files back to myNETfolder and they will sync back to the server and then back to your desktop so they are ready for you the next time you are back in the office.

I personally use myNETfolder on my computers and I have had it syncing as many as five computers at one time. It is a life saver to know that no matter which computer I happen to be working on, my most current files are always in my myNETfolder.

You might be thinking, "I just keep all my files on a USB 'thumb drive' and carry it everywhere, so why bother with all this syncing stuff?".

That is an excellent question, and I, too, carry a thumb drive with files on it. My question back to you is, "Where's your backup?" If you lose that thumb drive, or it gets damaged somehow, or you leave it at home on your way to the airport, then what?

With myNETfolder, your files are automatically backed up to the remote server as well as being distributed across each computer that you have the client installed on. Plus, if you find yourself using a computer that doesn't have the client, you can access your files directly on the remote server using any web browser.
